Cerveny klastor

Dunajec

Wednesday 11 June, Kroscienko-Cerveny Klastor-Tatranska Lomnica, 78 km

A bicycle/hiking trail along the Dunajec river is leading to a small cabin of the Polish-Slovakian customs. The Polish customs officer is suspicious about the lack of Polish stamps in my passport. After I told him i entered Poland via Germany I'm allowed to enter Slovakia.

Tatra mountains

On my way to the Tatra mountains, I pass desolated Slovakian villages. Cycling through a few poor settlements of gypsies feels like i am in a 3rd world country rather than a (near future) EU country. Finally the jagged peaks of the Tatra mountains appear, unfortunately the views are slightly hazy because of approaching thunder. Close to the winter sports resort of Tatranska Lomnica I find a good campground, just in time to pitch my tent before the thunderstorms arrive.

Thursday 12 June, Tatranska Lomnica-Kezmarok-Levoca-Betliar, 119 km

From Kezmarok i try to find a shortcut to Levoca. Unfortunately the road is leading to a gate, and continues on forbidden military zone :-(
A longer than expected detour brings me finally in Levoca, a pretty historical walled town. From Spisska a long climb through the forested hills of the Slovakian Paradise. When i cross a small village two little kids start to race on their bikes to catch up with me, and even in the long climb they manage to keep up with me. Close to the summit they descend back to the village. So scouts for new "Armstrongs" and "van Moorsels" are recommended to watch the future Slovakian riders closely ;-)
After a long hot day ride I end my trip on a small cosy campsite near the castle of Betliar. Unfortunately I'm not alone, a big group of schoolkids stay there as well... I'm glad i brought my ear plugs.
